Objectives

The common ground for the group is the concept of Spatial Modeling applied in various contexts and scales. The main goal is to consolidate and expand previous work, based not only on quality but also on uniqueness, especially through the methods of approach to various themes in Geography. These methods are adequate for the theoretical framework that defines the group, including the concept that the territory is a dynamic system, result of interactions of various scales and actors. Also important is to explore methodologies based on different tools, which support the acquisition, exploration and analysis of qualitative and quantitative information.

In the future, the Group intends to further develop its own applications in order to support the modeling activities required in the different action areas of the group.
This group aims to promote transdisciplinarity and intends to continue its focus on Geographic Information Technologies, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) in order to develop geographic modeling and advanced spatial analysis in the following areas:

Spatial Analysis and Simulation: cellular automata and urban simulation, statistical computing, an approach based on multi-agent system for the study of spatial epidemics using GIS;
Urban Remote Sensing: identification and measurement of urban sprawl and land use / land cover; sustainable urban form and morphology, pixel by pixel and object-oriented image analysis;
Geodemographics and GIS: migration; population growth dynamics in cities and regions;

Geographic Modeling: coastal systems and beach management; environmental modeling and physical geography; urbanization and metropolization processes;

Spatial Planning: multi-scale, uncertainty and governance;

GIS and Society: spatial data infrastructures, Geography of information society, Geography network and dissemination of knowledge, WEBGIS and public participation, public participation and citizenship (in the modeling of natural phenomena)
